The SnoopSnitch (New Android App Stops Smartphone’s Spies) was first developed by the German mobile-phone security researches Karsten Nohl, Alex Senier and Tobias Engel, and all of Berlin-based security company SRLabs. This new Android app is first introduced in Chaos Computer Security Conference of presentation which is at Hamburg on Dec 27, 2014. Then, this SnoopSnitch (New Android App Stops Smartphone’s Spies) was launched in Google App store on Dec 29, 2014 for free. This new Android App does not protect your Android mobiles from the Snoops. But it gives you the alert that somewhere the Snooping is happening for you.

When the mobile device transforms from legitimate cell tower to “Stingrays” which is also called as IMSI catchers, then this new Android app SnoopSnitch informs/tells you. The developers explained about this new Android app SnoopSnitch in their talk as the Title of “Mobile Self-Defense (SnoopSnitch)”. In an Interview with tech news site Motherboard, One of the developers Nohi described about this SnoopSnitch (New Android App Stops Smartphone’s Spies) as “Catcher Catcher”.

Even though this SnoopSnitch (New Android App Stops Smartphone’s Spies) is free on the Google Play Store, this SnoopSnitch does not work in all Android devices. To make the Android devices to work SnoopSnitch, this app must require Qualcomm chipset which is like Snapdragon system-on-a-chip. But not all Android devices have this Qualcomm chipset. There is list of tested SnoopSnitch compatible devices which is announced on SRLabs website.

There are many Smartphone’s companies like Samsung and Sony gave their product (including Samsung Galaxy S5) with Qualcomm chipset. To accept this new Android App – SnoopSnitch, the Compatible device must root. This Compatible device also needs to run stock Android 4.1 or later rather than manufacturer or the carrier builds. And this Compatible device must needs to be use GSM carrier protocol as naturally instead of CDMA.
